About Agoro, Northern Uganda
Agoro is a war-torn rural community in Northern Uganda, located in Kitgum district on the border with Sudan. Despite its fertile lands and industrious population, Agoro has been devastated by 17 years of almost continuous civil and tribal conflicts. Many people have been killed or forced into fighting for the rebel factions. Those still alive have lost their herds of goats which are Agoro'a main means of self-sustainability. The resulting poverty and general lack of security have made it virtually impossible for the inhabitants to work or attempt to rebuild.
Agoro's population (part of the ethnic Acholi people) comes to around 16,500 and their facilities consist of 6 primary schools and 2 healthcare centres. However, these facilities should be considered in the light of Agoro's large geographical area and lack of reliable electricity or safe transport.
